Dragon King Pine Crane Katana

The red-crowned crane holds deep symbolic weight in Japanese culture, believed to live a thousand years and regarded as a mark of authority. An old idiom refers to an unchallengeable final word as "one word from the crane." Paired here with the pine, another symbol of longevity and wisdom in Shinto belief, the two motifs combine in this katana's fittings.

The 28 1/4" forged T10 steel blade carries a prominent hamon with a mirror-finished ji and mune. Black cotton tsuka-ito wraps over white same (ray skin), set against silver crane menuki, seppa, and habaki, with bronzed fittings on the tsuba, fuchi, and kashira. The textured brown saya features an 8 1/4" black and matte striped section near the koiguchi, finished with a charcoal and copper accented sageo and buffalo horn kurikata and kojiri.
