Book Cover Type

Fencing or the Science of Arms offers a previously unpublished English translation of Salvator Fabris' influential 1606 rapier treatise. Translated in the early 20th century by A. F. Johnson, this typescript was preserved in the Howard de Walden Library and the Wallace Collection for decades before being carefully transcribed by Michael Chidester and brought to print for the first time.

Fabris served as personal fencing master to King Christian IV of Denmark, and his treatise on the rapier, used alone or alongside a dagger or cloak, became one of the most influential and widely copied works in the history of Italian swordsmanship. This illustrated edition includes reproductions of Fabris' original artwork throughout, presenting his system of footwork, guards, attacks, and defenses as close to its original form as modern publishing allows.

An essential primary source for serious students of Italian rapier fencing, offering direct access to one of the discipline's most important masters.
